I have to admit, since I finished Discovery of witches I have been counting down to the release of Shadow of Night: A Novel by Deborah Harkness.
As I was eager to plunge back into Diana’ and Mathews world of witches,
vampires, and demons. I wanted to learn more about Diana herself and I even
found myself wanting to know what secrets of the mysterious book Ashmole 782 hides
.
The focus
of Shadow of Night is more on character development than
furthering the mythology of the series.
During A Discovery of Witches, Matthew
was a bit of a mystery. A riddle in a riddle . He seemed to know everything
about Diana, but she knew very little about him. But this all changes in this book. As we delve into the story Matthew’s past is put on display,
The setting certainly makes the past
come alive with vivid descriptions. Which
makes you feel as if you are really there.
The story itself is much like the first book in the series. It pulls you in
and leaves you wanting more.
Harkness has an amazing eye for detail. While some readers may try to predict where the novel is going to go,
they will be surprised time and again by what the author has in store for them.
I honestly cannot say enough can’t say enough wonderful things about this
series. This is one of the best series I’ve ever read and I don’t say that
lightly.
The Story
Book Two of the All Souls Trilogy plunges Diana and Matthew into
Elizabethan London, a world of spies and subterfuge, and a coterie of
Matthew’s old friends, the mysterious School of Night. The mission is
to locate a witch to tutor Diana and to find traces of Ashmole 782, but
as the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them they embark on a very
different journey, one that takes them into heart of the 1,500 year old
vampire’s shadowed history and secrets. For Matthew Clairmont, time
travel is no simple matter; nor is Diana’s search for the key to
understanding her legacy.
