Madame Tussaud's Apprentice by Kathleen Benner Duble

Posted by Paranormalangelblog at Tuesday, December 22, 2015 0 comments

Synopsis

In 1789, with the starving French people on the brink of revolution, orphaned Celie Rosseau, an amazing artist and a very clever thief, runs wild with her protector, Algernon, trying to join the idealistic freedom fighters of Paris. But when she is caught stealing from none other than the king's brother and the lady from the waxworks, Celie must use her drawing talent to buy her own freedom or die for her crimes. Forced to work for Madame Tussaud inside the opulent walls that surround Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Celie is shocked to find that the very people she imagined to be monsters actually treat her with kindness. But the thunder of revolution still rolls outside the gates, and Celie is torn between the cause of the poor and the safety of the rich. When the moment of truth arrives, will she turn on Madame Tussaud or betray the boy she loves? From the hidden garrets of the starving poor to the jeweled halls of Versailles, "Madame Tussaud's Apprentice" is a sweeping story of danger, intrigue, and young love, set against one of the most dramatic moments in history.

Review

I received  a copy of this book for a honest review.

Let me start by saying that had I not received a copy of this book, I honestly  don't think i would have ever picked it up to read. Which would have been a shame as this book is fantastic.

Welcome to France  pre-revolution.  We are introduced  to  Célie and Algernon, two teenage orphans who are fighting  for  survival on the streets  of Paris.

Celie was saved by Algernon after the death of her family.  Not only does she owe him her life, but over time she has fallen in love with him.

Forced to running cons and steal  to survive. Celie only outlet is her talent at drawing. But when a con goes wrong, her talent  for drawing is what can save her.

Enter Manon Tussaud who takes Celie into her care as her apprentice.  Where Celie  finds herself living in a comfortable home with nice, caring people who also teach her the trade of waxworks. The only thing missing is Algernon. Who she feels she owes her life to.

Since the death of ger family Célie has always wanted equality in France, but after spending some time living in Versailles she realises that the royal family might actually be as much prisoners in their life. Not everything is  as it appears to be. When  she sends  Algernon  a drawing of her time in Versailles, she will inadvertently  helps to incite the revolution .

Madame Tussaud's Apprentice is a story about a young girl trying to survive in a miserable and dangerous city. There  is also the added element of the French Revolution provided an intriguing and violent backdrop for this tale.  The twist at the end was a nice surprise and a great way to finish.

I really think that this is a book that you should add to your to read pile today .

Dark Tide (Waterfire Saga #3) by Jennifer Donnelly

Posted by Paranormalangelblog at Sunday, December 06, 2015 0 comments

Synopsis

Once a lost and confused princess, Serafina is now a confident leader of the Black Fin Resistance (BFR). While she works on sabotaging her enemy and enlisting allies for battle, her friends face challenges of their own. Ling is in the hold of Rafe Mfeme's giant trawler, on her way to a prison camp. Becca meets up with Astrid and learns why the Ondalinian mermaid is always so angry: she is hiding a shameful secret. Ava can't return home, because death riders await her arrival. And it is getting more and more difficult for Mahdi, Serafina's betrothed, to keep up the ruse that he is in love with Lucia Volerno. If Lucia's parents become suspicious, his life--and all of Sera's hopes--will be extinguished. Political intrigue, dangerous liaisons, and spine-tingling suspense swirl like a maelstrom in this penultimate book in the WaterFire saga

Review
We hit the water with a splash in the 3rd book in the Waterfire Saga.

Dark Tide picks up where Rogue Wave left off. The girls are on the hunt for the remaining talismans and their lifes a still in danger as the death riders hunt for them.

So let's start with a little update on the girls.
♢Sera and Neela are now working with the Black Fin Resistance in a effort to save the realms.
♤ Astrid is heading home but is it the secret  she is hiding from the girls or what she fines when she returns home that will seal her fate.
♢ Ling is held captive and what she learns  will change not only her world but it will she'd light on who their enemy truly is.
♤ Ava is still looking for her talismans but will it be a mistake that will cost her everything.
♢Becca world will be further changed when her life is saved by a human.

The Waterfire saga is  more then a story about mermaids. It is  about finding inner strength and believing in yourself when everything seems hopeless. That you can be anything you want to be if you believe in you self.

It is refreshing  to read a story were the females are not waiting  to be rescued of saved by the leading male.  The mermaids are the focus and the mermen are secondary  characters  in the story. Each mermaid  bringing a different  strength  and  courage.

The  focus in Dark Tide is on  Sera, Ling, and Astrid. With the story primaraly told from there POV.  Another twist is the introduction  of Lucia's  POV, with thus we   get a glimpse into what's happening in Miromara.

This is a beautifully  crafted story, that pulls you into a underwater  world. I can not wait to see what will happen  next.

Rogue Wave (Waterfire Saga #2) by Jennifer Donnelly

Posted by Paranormalangelblog at Friday, December 04, 2015 0 comments

Synopsis

Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled-powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six.

Serafina believes her talisman was buried with an old shipwreck. While researching its location, she is almost discovered by a death rider patrol led by someone familiar. . . . The pain of seeing him turned traitor is devastating.

Neela travels to Matali to warn her parents of the grave threat facing their world. But they find her story outlandish; a sign that she needs to be confined to her chamber for rest and recovery. She escapes and travels to Kandina, where her talisman is in the possession of fearsome razormouth dragons.

As they hunt for their talismans, both Serafina and Neela find reserves of courage and cunning they didn't know they possessed. They face down danger and death, only to endure a game-changing betrayal, as shocking as a rogue wave

Review

Rouge wave picks up where Deep Blue left off.

Seraphina and Neela, are both looking for the talisman that will help defeat Abbadon. The problem is, they don't know what they look like or where to start.  In order to find the talismans and to protect  them self from those who hunt them they split up.

The book was non stop action, and did change POV  a few times. Which helped to give the book pace and depth.

Like the first book freindship is at the forefront of the story. However unlike Deep Blue, we get to see a little  romance. We also get to see a different side to Serafina and a secret  from Deep Blue is revealed.

Finding a good mermaid series is often  hard. It can oftern be to girly, bland or to over worked, but Jennifer Donnelly  interpretation of life underwater and her take on mermaids is one I really enjoyed. It has the ideal mix of fantasy, magic and realism to not only pull you into the world but to jeep you there.
This series  is  the perfect holiday  read.
